Summer

June - August

The above image is taken from the mountain Måtind in August 2024 and is looking down at our village Stave.

  • This is the season for living outdoors. Cook your dinners on the beach, go for long hikes and bring a towel for the cold dips. This time of year offers 24hrs of sunlight aka Midnight Sun, which means there is no darkness at all, even at night. Although this is officially summer you can still experience cold days, wind and rain - after all this is the Arctic. End of July and beginning of August is usually pretty consistent for weather but you really never know what’s around the corner. Dont leave your newspaper on the balcony whilst you go inside to make a cup of tea - you’re on an island and the wind might come out of nowhere.

  • Cloudberries, blueberries, Meadowsweet in our garden, Fireweed, Nettle, Dandelion, fresh water fish.

  • Andøya is one of the best places in Norway to see whales all year around, especially sperm whales.
In the summer season you get birds like the Puffin as well as Northern Gannet, Cormorants, White-tailed godwit, Auk, Loons, Eagles and other animals like otters, seals and moose.

  • Always pack wool and rain/wind jacket. Layering is key! If you are lucky all you need is a t shirt and shorts, but do pack for temperatures down to 7 degrees if you want to be on the safe side.

For footwear you should be good if you have a pair of waterproof sneakers for hiking and a pair of sandals for those lazy days on the beach. Dont bother with the umbrella, the wind will catch it!
