FAQs
How to get there?
To get to House of Hulda and the town of Stave you have a few options.
By plane you can either fly to Andenes Airport (ANX) which is a 20 minute drive from the house, or you can fly to Evenes Airport (EVE) which is a 3hr drive away. Evenes airport has got direct flights from cities like London, Milan Bergamo, Oslo and Zurich.
Distances are long in Andøya and the public transport is almost non existent, so we recommend renting a car if you are going Andøya, even if you are flying directly to the local airport. When you reach the town of Stave, you can either park your car at the local community house or, if your car is up for it, you can drive all the way up to the house along a 100 meter long crass path.
What season to visit?
Every season is special in its own right. We have made an explore section above for what to expect for each of the seasons, so that you can base your visit around what you would like to get out of your trip.
Are there any shops nearby?
House of Hulda is situated in the small town of Stave, where there are no shops - however you are situated 10 minute drive between Bleik (drive north) and Nordmela (drive south). Both these towns have a local shop with a cafe as well as a local pub.
If you drive in to Andenes, which is the main town, you will find all the big grocery shops (Rema 1000, Coop, Bunnpris) and further in to town a couple of cafes, a wine bar, interior shop, whale safari and other activities.
Are there cafes and restaurants nearby?
The closest cafe is in the town of Bleik and is run by the local grocery shop. It’s a lovely spot for getting to know the locals, get some ice cream or just people watch.
In Stave there is a campsite 10 minutes walk away where they sell coffee, beer, pizza and a few other items. They also have Hotpools at Stave Camping which is a lovely experience, specially in the winter under the Northern Light.
The Bleik Pub have seasonal opening hours, so make sure you check this before you plan your journey there.
There are a few local restaurants if you head in to Andenes town, but Marmelkroken in the south west part of Andøya is worth the visit if you are looking for great locally produced food. Alveland in Dverberg is our favourite place in the island for cinnamon buns and is also worth a visit for the locally produced soaps and oils.
Will I see the Northern Light?
If you visit between late September and early April, and stay over two weeks to maximise chance of no clouds, we can almost guarantee you will see the Northern Lights. House of Hulda is set back from the cluster of houses in the town, and there is minimal light pollution which means you could just pop your head out on the balcony to check how it’s looking. Any day without clouds will be almost certain luck for seeing the Aurora Borealis.
Will there be a host to welcome me?
House of Hulda is a self-contained house on an Arctic Island with hardly any neighbours. The house will be ready and prepared for your arrival, but you will be left to your own devices for your whole stay including check-in and check-out. If you need any help or assistance we are of course available over phone or can arrange for a local to help out.
